A couple of days of frustration to start off this challenge of ours. I thought we had found a neat little area where there was very little competition for a number of keywords related to a product sold by a merchant we have been looking at.
However, it seems we will not be able to promote this product (which has quite a famous name) because Google says using keywords that contain the brand name breaches some trademark rule. Google's words are... 'A trademark term is preventing your ad from showing'
The bit I don't get is that I thought that lots of affiliates made lots of money bidding on brands. If so, why can't we???
Grrr! Need to understand this as it is an important point. Will do more research tomorrow.

Adsense on a Channel in Blogger
Blogger has a big advantage over other systems like Wordpress when it comes to adding an Adsense banner - it is just 2 or 3 clicks using the 'Add Page Element' link under the Template tab and the banner appears.
The problem is, however, this does not put it on a channel with your Adsense account and so you do not know how well the banner is performing. With a quick bit of searching around on Google I found the solution is to set up the channel in the Adsense account, get the code and copy it into the box on the 'HTML/JavaScript' Page Element page . I left the title blank and hit 'save' - worked like a dream!

What is this challenge all about?
This challenge is all about a small web development company that has set itself a target to create a regular £10,000 stream of profit per month from Affiliate Marketing.
We have been dabbling with Affiliate Marketing for a couple of years now but have never given it the attention that is required to make good money. We know that Affiliate Marketing is not as easy as it might seem and we are wary of going for a ‘get rich quick’ approach.
So, instead, we are going for a ‘get rich slow’ approach! The challenge is for us to be at the regular £10,000 profit a month level one year from now - that is by November 2008.
We have a few very poorly performing affiliate sites already and we have the in-house skills to build new sites so we are not starting from scratch. On the downside we have clients who have demands on our time and these clients pay all our bills at the moment so we cannot devote every minute of every day to Affiliate Marketing just yet - but we hope that in time this will change.
So - here goes!

Blogger vs Wordpress
Well - this is my first post so I might as well describe what I am doing first. I thought that a really good way to chart the progress of our challenge to make £10,000 profit a month using Affiliate Marketing would be to report thoughts in a blog.
I'm not sure if using Blogger is the right thing to do or not - I know that a lot of affiliates love the Wordpress software but I am not sure if this applies to the hosted Wordpress blogging thing too. Anyhow - I have used Blogger in the past and kind of know my way around it so this is why I have looked at it.
As part of the set-up on both Blogger and Wordpress you have to opt for a template (or theme). Although this blog is not intended to be the route to our internet millions - we may as well make some money out of it from the odd bit of Adsense advertising. With this in mind I wanted to use a theme where the design can easily accommodate Adsense or other banners.
Making Adsese appear on a Blogger blog is as easy as anything but I do think that there should be more options on the template options - they are all pretty much 2 column and do not offer much scope for ad banners.
On the Wordpress blog there were many more template options - the downside is that you cannot mess with designs on Wordpress unless you upgrade to the CSS edit option - it is dead cheap but then you are into doing CSS stuff - we can do all this but I'm not sure it is the best use our time. I think you can buy templates for both so maybe we can look at this in the future.
I would have expected that Blogger would be loved by Google (what with them owning it) but I have to say other small blogs we have built using Blogger have not done that well on Google - maybe this is a lack of links and content issue? At the recent A4UExpo, Kieron Donoghue said ‘Google just loves it’ when talking about Wordpress so that is a pretty good recommendation.
Anyhow I think, on balance, a Blogger blog is the best thing for us - quick and easy to set up as I know how to use it - leaves more time for learning more about Affiliate Marketing and to reach that magic £10,000 progit!
